Workshop Description
This workshop will break down the interpreting process from start to finish in a medical interpreting assignment. Highlight topics: assignment preparation, what to do upon arrival, specific tips and best practice for working in a doctor’s office vs a hospital setting, the art of “giving report” to the next interpreter at the hand-off, HIPAA considerations for interpreters, Universal Codes, and Informed Consent.
This workshop will prepare medical interpreters to work in medical settings while remaining safe and avoiding infection exposure. Concepts taught during this session include: infectious diseases, PPE (personal protection equipment), contact precautions, droplet precaution, airborne precautions, interpreting in the operating room including specific instruction on the sterile field, bioterrorism and suggested vaccinations.
On the 2nd day in the morning, this workshop will consist mainly of two parts. The first half will focus on medical terminology and how to break down complex medical terms for meaning. The second half will focus on interpreting medical questions by using several recommended strategies. Medical questions can be extremely tricky and complex. It’s important to have strategies to interpret them accurately.
Often when we arrive at medical assignment, things can end up being far more complicated than we originally anticipated and prepared for. Discussions will center on medical assignments unexpectedly becoming legal or mental health situations, or ones that involve child services or palliative care. Strategies on how to navigate complex medical situations will be discussed.
